Millicent the Wondercat

Millicent is a truly remarkable cat.  She has little-to-no fear of anything.  When the doorbell rings, she races to the door to see who has come to visit her!!  After all, why else would anyone be there?  How many cats do you know who would not just put up with, but actively enjoy interacting with an 18-month-old child?  More than one friend has told us that, should we ever need to find a new home for her, they'll be waiting in line for the chance to take her home!

When she and her two siblings arrived on my doorstep, they were about 3 weeks old and very ill, having been abandoned by their mother on the porch of a  Clinic staff member.  All had serious upper respiratory infections, and none was eating on its own.  I had to tube feed them 5-6 times a day for the first few days, as well as give them the antibiotics necessary to get well.  Poor little guys were starved, both physically and emotionally!

The humom thought a trip outside in the sun would be good, but "oh, my eyes!"

Not round and chubby like a kitten should be, she was scrawny and unstable on her feet.

It took me a long time to convince Millicent that she actually could eat on her own, that food did not only come from a bottle, and that I did not have to be involved in the process.  She was probably 8 weeks old before she would eat from a dish (and then only if it had a spoon in it!).

Getting a picture of this little girl was a challenge - she just would not willingly participate.  So this picture is a prime example of the old saying, "It's not what you see, it's what you don't see"!

Once healthy, she developed a very determined curious streak, getting into everything she could.  Everything is something to be investigated, and so she got her nickname, "Busy-body."

After she decided eating on her own was a good idea, she became the pig of the crowd.  She'd eat 60% of the wet food I'd put down for 5 kittens!  No longer was she underweight!

Busy-body sez "Hi, whatcha doing, can I help?"

"Hey, what's going on?   Did someone call me?"

When I began fostering, my husband was certain it was in an attempt to add more cats to the household.  His edict was that I could keep one at any time, but that would be the end of fostering.    Of course I would fall in love with one in every litter, but when he'd ask if I wanted to keep that one, my litany was "Not if it means giving up fostering."

After I nearly lost Miracle, he relented and said I could keep her and could still foster.  What he didn't anticipate was that HE would be the one to fall in love with (and decide to keep) Millicent!
